Our Policies
We have four different ways we
grade our kittens - pet, high-pet, show pet and show breeder. These grades are outlined in
detail on the cost page. Kittens and cats sold as pets or show-pets
are altered before they are sent home - no exceptions.
We provide care instructions with our cats and kittens, but we have
also included a section in our website called "kittey
goes home" which features a list of items you will need for your new kitten, as
well as feeding and bathing instructions for your new pet. All of our cats have health
& genetic guarantees . Our kittens are sold with a written sales contract and we do
include a written health/genetic guarantee and a veterinary health certificate at time of
sale. We have screened 100% of our breeding cats for FeLV, FIP, and FIV and they were
found negative.
We take a great deal of care to prevent your kitten from ever coming in
contact with the cattery population. While they can see the other cats, they cannot come
into nose-to-nose contact nor is anything used in another part of our cattery ever used in
the kitten area. FIP does NOT have a test that can be done currently, which will determine
100% that a given animal will not mutate from corona virus to FIP. If a DNA test becomes
available (currently research is being done in this area) we will certainly test 100% of
our breeding stock, to assure we do not have any potential for the mutation. So while we
take care in our handling and our environmentally care/cleanliness, like any cattery we
cannot confirm if a given kitten will mutate into FIP some day. Therefore, we offer a
replacement from different bloodlines, should this ever happen. (And if any line in our
cattery were to show a fault like FIP, we would spay/neuter any adult, with a resulting
FIP kitten if they delivered a FIP kitten with more then one different partner. But
we would never repeat a breeding with the same two animals that created a positive FIP
kitten). Our policies are set up to protect our animals as well as the purchasing public.
Hopefully one day soon, we will know what the cause and cure is for this disease.
Additionally, we have DNA-PKD tested 100% of our breeding stock
and all kittens. We have set up a chart to follow the cats/kittens that came back
either with a positive scan at Guelph, Ont OR with the DNA-PKD test done at UC Davis.
All cats were spayed/ or neutered and placed with families who were aware of their
illness or the potential for them to become ill in the future. Click on this link
for PKD Status update. This is a full report of the
history of our (Hedwig) cattery with this sad disease.
We also have another report from another breeder, which give a
great deal of details on the disease and how it can act in a cattery. Each cattery
has it's own history and you should ask if the cats were DNA tested or ONLY SCANNED.
If they were only Scanned negative, there is a possibility they could still have
DNA for the disease and it does not show. So make sure the breeder shows you
DNA tests from UC Davis for for the sire and the dame. It only takes one positive
adult to create positive babies. ( All of our kittens come with a copy of the reports for
their dam(mom) and sire (dad) and if the kitten was tested because one of his/her parents
was positive, you will get the copy of that report as well. ALL kittens were tested
that had one positive parent.
What comes with kitty?
1. Pedigree
2. Registration paper
3. Medical Records - shots included are:1st & 2nd set of URI shots (Felo-Vax
"killed 4-way); plus two or three, vet exams. (depending on vet schedules), spay or
neuter certificate, rabies certificate if over 16 weeks. Deoworming record
completed.
4. International health certificate
5. Well groomed kitten, (use to bath and blow-dry & nail clipping) .
6. Well socialized (trusting/happy) and healthy kitten, which is clean and litter
trained to clumping litter.
Genetic guarantee?
7A. Contract which holds agreements and warrantee. (IE: Health &
100% replacement warrantee, (IE kitten cost value only) should kitten/cat test positive or
die, from genetic fault due to PKD). The replacement is based on the the animals ages, you
will get either a new kitten / or an older kitten around the same age as the kitten/cat
which was found ill with a genetic fault. This replacement is given from a different line,
not related to the same line (same dam with same sire), as soon as a litter and kitten is
born of the same quality/dollar value. (Examples: Heart, kidney FIP etc.)
New Test available as of Dec 31/2004:
Now that the DNA-PKD test is available at UC Davis for
PKD, all kittens that came from the two lines found positive, are covered with this
genetic guarantee, even if the kitten is still not showing health issues but came back
with a positive PKD-DNA test from UC Davis, the owner has the option to choose another
baby.
While we can not fix the scan findings, it was
the best test that was available at the time for trying to purge PKD out of the Persian
breed. But now with the DNA test, we can be 100% sure that if the Dam is neg and the
sire is negative, all kittens will be negative as well. If one parent is positive and one
negative. Each resulting kitten has 50% of a chance to be neg or pos when tested.
If your kitten is from the following females,(Lena, Kelly or Keeley) simply contact us. We will help you get the
DNA-PKD testing comepleted.
7B: Kindness Replacement: This is a replacement the
breeder may decide to give a family, as she/he knows they did all they could to care
correctly for their kitten and the cause of the loss was not clear. (IE: tests were
much too costly for the owners and as a result, nothing conclusive could be found
that caused the death or illness). Reports from their vet will still be required on
their vet letterhead and signed etc. The report will give an indication of what the
vet suspected was the problem or tests required to conclude what the problem "May
have been". The vet will also have to give the current status of the kitten.
(IE: living on drugs daily or put to sleep, due to illness on a given date etc).
This is a replacement reserved by the breeder to use, for a loss of a
kitten at no fault of the owner, whilekitten was very young. Does not include not
kitten proofing your home, or letting the kitten outside for example. Allowing
them to eat house plants or drink from the toliet bowl with chemicles in it etc. Nor
does it cover abusive persons harming the kitten. So again, this is an option the
breeder may decide to use in some rare cases.
8. A clean well trained kitten to clumping litter with a hooded litter pan. (We do not
sell kittens that are not already well trained). NOTE: Owner MUST clean litter pan daily,
otherwise risk kitten/cat using another area of the home as a litter pan. Cats will NOT
use a dirty litter pan! Do NOT change the kind of litter used (any clumping is ok),
otherwise the cat may not know where the litter pan is and us another part of the home out
of confusion.
9. If choosing a Pet; High-Pet or Show-Pet the kitten will be spayed or neutered (if
both testicles are down). If not, then the owner will need to sign a contract to agree to
have it completed by 6 months of age. A certificate of spay/ or neuter will be sent with
the kitten, if completed.
10. Sample food of the kittens current diet.
11. We remain available for advice/help, even after the arrival of your baby. We have
managed to make many new friends, from customers and enjoy staying in touch for as long as
you wish. However, if it has been a long time since we talked, send sire/dam name and DOB
of your kitten, so I can locate the file to help remind me.
